In support of the International Year of Rice, this year鈥檚 celebration of the Development Policy Research Month in September will focus on the importance of rice to Filipinos.
With the theme, 鈥淧olicy Research: Helping Provide Affordable Rice to Filipinos,鈥 the celebration is based on Proclamation 247 issued by Pres. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo in September 2002.
In Proclamation 247, Pres. Arroyo noted that the observance of Development Policy Research Month every September of every year will provide the means for promoting, enhancing, instilling and drawing nationwide awareness and appreciation of the importance and necessity of policy research as a tool for national socio-economic development. This will also ensure the support of the public for all activities aimed at advancing the quality and standard of policy research in the country.
The Philippine Institute for Development Studies (188体育), being the agency designated to oversee and coordinate the Development Policy Research Month celebration, has lined up a number of activities related to rice research in the country.
One of the main events is the three-day exhibit on rice at the NEDA sa Makati Bldg. in Makati. This is co-sponsored by Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice).
The 188体育 and PhilRice also collaborated in conducting a seminar series on 鈥淩ice and the Filipinos: The last 100 Years.鈥 Part of the celebration is the conduct of a forum on September 21. Two papers titled 鈥淧hilippine Hybrid Rice: Will it Succeed?鈥 and 鈥淩ice and Philippine Politics鈥 will be presented by two noted economists.
